Minister Calls on Landlords to Promote Tenants Leading Change
Communities Minister Stephen Williams MP has written to councils and housing associations asking them to promote information about the Right to Manage and Community Cashback to their staff and tenants.
The information is included in a new involvement leaflet called 'Tenants Leading Change' that was launched by the Minister at Leathermarket JMB in Southwark on July 17th.
In the letter the Minister says “As you will know, where tenants play an active role in their housing services we have seen services delivering better value for money, more responsive services, a faster resolution of complaints at a local level and higher satisfaction than before. We have also seen tenants gain a range of skills, supporting them in the world of work and beyond.”
NFTMO Chair Nick Reynolds has welcomed the Ministers’ support. He said “TMOs have been operating successfully for 50 years yet still only a tiny percentage of social housing is tenant managed. We welcome the leaflet and the government initiative to promote the model more widely because many tenants still don't know it’s an option. We do not say it is the right path for every community, but tenants should at least be aware of the possibility and landlords should respond positively where tenants step forward to get involved in this way.”
